Revolutionary Creations

Recently I discovered that the domain was available, so I bought it with the goal of recreating as much of its original content as possible from archived pages. I did not want someone else to purchase the domain and re-purpose the site for something that had nothing in common with the original RevolutionaryCreations.com website. Consider the information on this site for historical purposes as well as keeping alive the journalistic works of Thomas Deer. Tommy's commentaries in the Frontline section are political in nature and focus primarily on the issues of indigenous peoples and world events.
I am familiar with the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake which has land based gaming activities: poker rooms and raffles. What is interesting they also have a Kahnawake Gaming Commission website, which has a link to their interactive gaming sites. Kahnawake was one of the first jurisdictions in the world to recognize the opportunities afforded by the interactive gaming industry. Since then, the Commission has licensed and regulates a wide range of interactive gaming sites. I enjoy online gambling at a few online select US casinos, but I plan on looking up some of their affiliates, if I can find them, just to see what they offer to the online player. In the US during 2006 the US government passed the UIGEA laws that limited options for US online casino players. Even though it is NOT illegal for an individual to gamble, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act did create obstacles and limitations when it comes to finding online casino USA player-friendly sites because a player could not use their credit card to either add money to their online casino account or to with draw money via a credit card. Ten years later, funding and receiving winnings are no longer an issue at most online casinos. In fact the casinos often direct their promotions at US players. What a difference a few years makes.
If you are visiting Montreal, I suggest a visit to Kahnawake. Last year I was attending a conference in Montreal and several of us decided to go to their Kaienthóhkwen (Harvest Festival). I was sure glad I had brought my new North Face ski jacket on the trip since the weather was unusually frosty. I've been buying North Face jackets for years and I must say, they never disappoint whether it's a hoodie, vest, parker, rain jacket, shell, or a serious Summit jacket. High tech, innovative, beautifully designed, and I love the brands philosophy of making their product by improving our environmental performance and social responsibility in the supply chain. The festival was a great learning experience and a nice break from the conference. Sorry, but I digress.
Apologies that I was unable to find most of the images that were once posted on the site. I have left "placeholders" showing where there would have been images.

Ontario Provincial Police attack Haudenosaunee in Six Nations
At times, there are serious issues that need to gain exposure. Revolutionary Creations, as an Indigenous company, would like to take this time to inform visitors of the violent attack upon the Haudenosaunee People at Six Nations. We have posted some of the press release from that have been issued by Haudenosaunee authorities throughout the Confederacy. For more on the Reclamation Occupation at Six Nations, check out www.reclamationinfo.com
For Immediate Release
Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake – (Onerahtóhkha/April 20, 2006)
On April 18th, 2006, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Council at Grand River announced that the Governments of Canada and Ontario have pulled out of talks concerning the recent land repossession at Caledonia, ON.
With talks abruptly ending in this manner, it became apparent that the Government of Canada was not interested in seeking a peaceful resolve to this issue and have elected a violent imposition of their will.
At approximately 4:30am, the Ontario Provincial Police launched a violent attack upon occupants of the repossessed Haudenosaunee territory at Caledonia. The occupants there were unarmed and peaceful. Upon learning of this violent attack, the Rotisken’rakéhte of Kahnawake mobilized to discuss security measures to prevent any further violence in Caledonia and Grand River.
It was resolved that the Rotisken’rakéhte at Kahnawake shall establish defensive vigils at each entry point within our territory in support of our brothers and sisters at Caledonia. We wish to make clear that this is strictly a defensive measure to ensure that no further violence is initiated by the Governments of Canada and Ontario upon our people.
The Rotisken’rakéhte at Kahnawake urge the Governments of Canada and Ontario to stop any further plans to invade our territories. Furthermore, we insist on the Government of Canada to return to talks with the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Council to resolve this issue in a peaceful manner.

Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake stand by Reclamation Occupation at Caledonia
For Immediate Release
Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake – Onerahtókha/April 30, 2006
The Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake offer greetings and thanksgiving. On April 20, 2006, at approximately 4:30am; the Ontario Provincial Police launched a violent attack upon occupants of the repatriated Haudenosaunee Territory at Caledonia. The occupants there were unarmed and peaceful.
This unnecessary and insensitive measure to use violence is deplorable and intolerable, and is reminiscent of the brutal force used against our people during the events at Ipperwash in 1995, Kanehsatake in 1990, and Grand River in 1924 when the RCMP removed the traditional Haudenosaunee Confederacy Council by force of arms.
The Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake desire a peaceful resolve to this issue and implore the Governments of Canada and Ontario not to employ any further acts of violence or aggression upon our people. We feel that this is the best way to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the area.
The Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake would like to also take this opportunity to announce its full support for the reclamation occupation at Caledonia. Moreover, the Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake standby the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Council at Grand River as the legitimate governing authority of Oshwé:ken. It must be made clear that only through talks with the Haudenosaunee Six Nation Iroquois Confederacy can the wrongs of the past be made right.
The Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake call upon other Haudenosaunee nations and territories as well as Indigenous Peoples throughout the world; to stand in solidarity with the people of Grand River throughout this reclamation occupation.
In the meantime, the Haudenosaunee at Kahnawake are on alert in order to monitor the situation at Grand River and to assist to ensure peace remains.

More Background On Revolutionary Creations.com
Revolutionary Creations is a Mohawk‐owned freelance graphic art and illustration studio based in the territory of the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawà:ke, just outside Montréal, Québec. Founded and led by artist and illustrator Thomas Deer, the studio has built a distinctive creative identity centred on comic‐book aesthetics, Indigenous cultural voice, and dynamic freelance work across titles and commissions.
This article provides a deep dive into the studio’s ownership and leadership, location and cultural context, history and evolution, notable work and media coverage, audience and reputation, offerings and goals, and its broader cultural significance.
Ownership & Leadership
The studio is owned and operated by Thomas Deer (Kanien’kehà:ka), who is active as a graphic artist, colorist and illustrator, and also serves as a cultural liaison within his community. According to his LinkedIn profile, since 2005 he has worked as a graphic artist for the Kanien’kehà:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center in Kahnawà:ke.
His multifaceted role — combining Indigenous cultural work, art-direction, comics colouring, and freelance studio operations — positions the studio at an intersection of artistic production, cultural advocacy and entrepreneurship.
Thomas Deer’s role as founder and creative lead means the studio is tightly defined by his aesthetic, technical and cultural sensibilities. In media coverage he is identified as the designer behind an Indigenous-themed jersey for the Montréal Canadiens, credited with devising a design blending Mohawk symbolism and mainstream sports branding.
Location, Cultural Context & Community
Revolutionary Creations is located in Kahnawà:ke (often spelled Kahnawake), a Mohawk territory situated on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, near Montréal. Kahnawà:ke is historically significant, with its origins tracing back to a French Jesuit mission in the late 17th century and continuing as a thriving Indigenous community.
Operating from this locale gives the studio a rooted cultural identity: a space where Indigenous sovereignty, language revival, creative production and community identity converge. The proximity to Montréal provides access to wider creative networks, media and commerce, while retention of Mohawk community presence keeps the studio’s identity grounded and distinct.
Studio Goals, Identity & Offerings
The studio presents itself as a “freelance graphic art company” offering services such as comic-book colouring, illustration, character design, and graphic concepts. The creative voice blends comic book style with Indigenous motifs — a hybrid aesthetic that is both accessible to mainstream visual culture and rooted in Mohawk identity.
Goals of the studio include:
-
Producing high-quality visual pieces for clients and personal projects alike, with a focus on comics, pop culture and Indigenous storytelling.
-
Amplifying Indigenous creative voices in graphic arts and illustration, showing that Indigenous artists can lead in fields heavily dominated by non-Indigenous practitioners.
-
Bridging cultural production and community presence, by operating from Kahnawà:ke and engaging with local culture, language and identity in tangible ways rather than simply using Indigenous themes superficially.
-
Building a sustainable freelance enterprise, demonstrating how Indigenous‐owned studios can thrive, adapt and collaborate across genres and markets.
History & Evolution
From its web presence, Revolutionary Creations emerged in the mid-2000s as a portfolio site and studio platform for Thomas Deer’s work. Over time it has expanded its scope from personal projects to a broader freelance studio model, servicing comics and illustration markets.
Key milestones include:
-
Early work as colourist/illustrator for major comics publishers, building credibility in the industry.
-
Involvement in community and cultural roles (e.g., working with the Language & Cultural Center in Kahnawà:ke) which anchor the creative practice in Indigenous cultural service.
-
Media coverage in local Indigenous news noting his jersey design for the Montréal Canadiens’ Indigenous Celebration Night, a significant public-facing project linking sport, Indigenous symbolism and graphic art.
-
Ongoing freelance commissions and possibly collaboration with major comic book titles — though the studio retains a boutique, independent identity rather than becoming a large agency.
Notable Work & Media Coverage
One of the most visible public projects attributed to Thomas Deer (and thereby linked to the studio) is the design of an orange warm-up jersey for the Montréal Canadiens’ Indigenous Celebration Night. According to a local Kahnawà:ke news article, Deer created a logo that integrated Mohawk imagery: the Two Row Wampum belt, Silver Covenant Chain motif, a flint arrowhead and pottery motif — all embedded in the jersey design that appeared on the ice, jumbotron and auctioned for Indigenous youth charities.
This project highlights how the studio merges Indigenous cultural symbolism with mainstream brand identity — sports merchandising, public event design, cultural acknowledgement.
In broader press, Deer was also referenced in an article in Forbes which highlighted his consultancy role and teaching/linguistic work in the Mohawk community alongside his artistic career. Also note the essay in First Person Scholar which referenced Deer in the context of media/gaming cultural consultancy for Mohawk representation.
Such coverage indicates that the studio (through its lead) is recognised not only for artistic work but for cultural liaison, representation and advocacy in media.
Audience & Reputation
The audience for Revolutionary Creations spans several overlapping groups:
-
Comics and illustration industry clients: publishers, creators, and media needing colorists, illustrators and design input.
-
Collectors, fans and pop‐culture enthusiasts: who follow the work of Indigenous artists in comics or graphic art spaces.
-
Indigenous community stakeholders: organizations, events or cultural centres seeking visual-arts support rooted in Indigenous identity and executed at professional level.
-
Brands, sports teams or organisations: seeking culturally sensitive visuals or collaborations with Indigenous artists.
Reputation-wise, the studio enjoys a strong foundation of integrity: being Indigenous-owned, community-rooted, operated by someone who is active in cultural work and not simply a freelance contractor purely for profit. That identity likely builds trust among Indigenous clients and community partners. In mainstream creative sectors the studio differentiates through authentic cultural positioning plus technical comics experience.
Some limitations: Because much of the freelance world is behind-the-scenes (colouring, illustration) the studio may not always have high visibility in mainstream art circles compared to major agencies. However, the combination of personal brand and niche positioning gives it a unique value proposition.
Cultural & Social Significance
Revolutionary Creations carries significance beyond its commercial operations. Some key points:
-
Indigenous creative sovereignty: By operating a studio from Kahnawà:ke, under Indigenous ownership, the model counters the often-colonial dynamic of mainstream creative industries sourcing Indigenous imagery from non-Indigenous creators. It supports the concept of Indigenous producers controlling their own visual representation.
-
Bridging cultural identity and popular media: The studio’s work — such as the jersey design for the Canadiens — brings Indigenous symbolism into highly visible mainstream arenas (sports, comics) in a meaningful way rather than token or stereotypical.
-
Local cultural investment: The founder’s work with the language and cultural centre in his community reflects an integrated approach: artistic practice + cultural service. This model supports community resilience, language revitalization, identity and local employment opportunities.
-
Role modelling for emerging Indigenous artists: Seeing a functioning studio led by a Mohawk artist demonstrates possible pathways for younger Indigenous creators who wish to build professional practice without leaving identity or community behind.
-
Symbolic intersection of commerce and culture: The studio shows that commercial success and cultural grounding need not be contradictory. Its presence in comics, sports design, illustration positions Indigenous art in applied commercial markets, not just “heritage” contexts.
Services, Portfolio & Example Projects
While the studio’s exact full client list isn't publicly exhaustively listed, available information shows:
-
Comic‐book illustration & colouring: Thomas Deer has credits in major comics titles (including Star Wars, Godzilla, G.I. Joe, Star Trek) as noted in a local media piece.
-
Graphic design for sport and events: The Montréal Canadiens project produced jerseys featuring Indigenous imagery, which were auctioned for youth organizations.
-
Cultural liaison projects: Visual‐arts work for Indigenous community agencies (such as the Kahnawà:ke Language & Culture Centre).
-
Freelance illustration for pop culture / entertainment clients: The studio’s portfolio emphasises a “comic book style” with strong linework, colour, and dynamic design.
When selecting the studio for a project, clients can expect:
-
culturally informed visuals developed by an Indigenous artist working from a community base;
-
comic/pop-culture oriented design sensibility;
-
freelance flexibility (versus large agency overhead) with likely more personal involvement of the principal artist;
-
community-conscious output (e.g., aligning with Indigenous youth programmes, cultural representation goals).
Awards, Recognition & Press
While I did not locate a formal “award list” for the studio itself, the press coverage and high‐visibility projects serve as recognition in their own right. For example:
-
The jersey design for the Montréal Canadiens: covered by local Indigenous news, with public display at a major sports event and connection to youth charities.
-
The Forbes article referencing Thomas Deer’s role in Mohawk cultural consulting roles.
-
References in academic or cultural commentary (e.g., the article “The Tyranny of Realism” in First Person Scholar) citing his media consultancy.
These attest to the studio’s visibility and credibility in both Indigenous cultural spheres and creative industries.
Challenges & Opportunities
Operating a small Indigenous‐owned studio like Revolutionary Creations involves both risks and opportunities:
Challenges may include:
-
Competing with larger, well-capitalised agencies in the illustration/colouring market.
-
Balancing freelance commercial demands with community and cultural commitments (time, availability, pricing).
-
Maintaining portfolio visibility and client acquisition from a location outside major artist hubs (though Montréal proximity helps).
-
Navigating intellectual-property, rights management and payment terms in freelance creative work (common industry challenges).
Opportunities include:
-
Unique market positioning: Indigenous-owned, comics specialist, community rooted.
-
Collaborations across Indigenous cultural agencies, sports brands, popular media looking for diverse talent.
-
Growth into mentorship, workshops or community-based creative programmes (leveraging the founder’s community role).
-
Expansion into digital content, licensing, original IP — many comics/illustration studios are evolving into IP creation rather than just service work.
-
Enhanced visibility as broader creative industries seek Indigenous design and representation expertise.
Future Outlook
Given its foundations, the studio appears well placed to continue building in three vectors:
-
Visibility & portfolio growth: Taking on more visible commissions, or self-initiated projects that can generate public recognition (exhibitions, gallery shows, online art releases).
-
Community engagement: Deepening its ties with Indigenous youth development, arts education, language revitalization projects — positioning the studio as both creative enterprise and community asset.
-
Original works & IP development: Moving from service-work (colouring/commissions) toward creating original graphic novels, characters or brands tied to Indigenous stories — this could open higher margin opportunities and broader reach.
Revolutionary Creations stands as a standout example of how Indigenous creativity, community-rooted identity and professional graphic arts enterprise can intersect. With Thomas Deer at the helm, the studio operates from Kahnawà:ke, bridging Mohawk cultural integrity and mainstream visual media, from comics to sports design.
Whether you are a comics publisher, an Indigenous agency seeking culturally-authentic visuals, or simply a fan of illustration and graphic art, the studio offers a uniquely positioned partner: one that respects community, culture and craft.
